COTTON PRINTS ”KATTUNER”

Printed cotton fabrics were used both for clothing and furnishing. The patterns were inspired from woven silks and painted Indian and Chinese silks and cottons.

Blocktryck på bomull, först blocktryckt med reservagepasta och färgat rött, därefter blocktryckt med svart, tillslut försett med handmålade detaljer i gult och grått.

Datering: mitten av 1700-talet. Liknande provtryck på papper finns i Berchska samlingen, Nordiska Museet och i Langska samlingen, Visby Fornsal.

Block print on cotton. The fabric has first been printed with reserve paste and dyed red, then printed with black, finally the yellow and grey details were hand painted.

The fabric could be dated to the mid 18th century. Similar sampling prints on paper are kept in the Anders Berch collection, Nordiska Museet, Stockholm, and in the printer Lang’s collection, Fornsalen, county museum of Gotland, Visby.
