To carry essentials, women have traditionally worn hanging pockets attached around the waist. They were tied under the outer garment, which had openings in the sides, so that the pockets could be reached. The pockets needed to be practical and were often sewn from scraps of fabric left over. But the hanging pockets could also be decorative and worn on the outside of the skirt with ribbons or a hook in the waistband. Many preserved ones are today attributes of folk costumes.
